Tang’s China House – A Sarnia Staple with Generations of Heart

Since opening its doors in 1970, Tang’s China House has been more than just a restaurant—it’s been a cornerstone of community, culture, and connection in Sarnia. Founded by Garry and Diana Tang, who immigrated from China via Hong Kong and settled in Ontario in the late 1950s, the restaurant began as a modest 30-seat diner on Cromwell Street. Just one month after their daughter Lillian Tang-Smith was born, the family launched what would become a beloved local institution.

The Tangs lived above the restaurant, working tirelessly—often without vacations for years—to build a business that welcomed generations of Sarnia families. Staff and regulars became extended family, helping raise Lillian in a bustling, warm environment filled with food, laughter, and loyalty.

After decades away pursuing a career in Toronto, Lillian returned to Sarnia and reclaimed the family legacy. She now runs Tang’s with a renewed vision, blending tradition with fresh energy. The restaurant has undergone thoughtful renovations, and the dining room—once closed for years—is now open again, inviting guests to experience the full warmth of Tang’s hospitality.

Whether you’re stopping in for takeout or sitting down for a meal steeped in history, Tang’s China House offers more than great food—it offers a story worth sharing.
